I know, I know, should work on prospector, but that whole harddrive crashing thing kinda put me off.

And, maybe after working on something else, I'll get my motivation back :)

Anyway: I entered the 7day Roguelike competition 11 Hours ago (156 to go) And if anybody wants to know:
This is what i got so far
It is going to be a rather generic Fantasy roguelike
There is a dungeon in a glacier, and asleep at the bottom of it is a Fire demon about to wake up. You got to go down and kill it. Tactical twists I plan to have is to have walls that are easily destructable (getting less the deeper you get) and that there is a height map thrown over each level. You get a bonus if you attack somebody who is standing downhill and some spells should move downwards (Like D&Ds Cloudkill & Flaming Sphere) Firespells melting ground, Cold Spells raising it etc.

I also plan to have the dungeon branch a lot, with some branches being dead ends, and others being shortcuts.

And I have also decided to post the current state on a day by day basis here.

What it does so far:
Makes maps and distributes Items and displays them. Any key will display to the next Level. blue # are Ice Walls, destructable, white % are packed snow, easily destructable, and grey # are stone walls, indestructable.

I have to confess I am rather pleased. A lot of stuff already working. If you want to take a look:

Hehe, thanks for the support :)

Anyway:
Day 2:
You can walk around (including through walls) Space still takes you to the next level down, no stairs yet.
Pick up and equip items
Scrolls of Identify work already as well

So i didn't post days 3,4,5 and 6, since nobody had downloaded it till then :)
Anyway here is the more or less finished product.

Image

I claim a partial success

- The game is Playable
- The game is Winnable
- The game is looseable
- Most of the stuff I wanted in there is in there

But: There are some bugs and Balance Issues.
Sometimes Monsters walk over each other, no idea why
The LOS sometimes passes through doors.

Commands:
numpad to move, 5 to rest
, Pick up item
d drop item
i Inventory
E equipment
e eat food
z zap spell
Z zap wand
q quaff potion
r read scroll
W Display Weapon skills
R Display Resistances
o Open door
c close door
< go down stairs
> go up stairs

Have fun!

It looks like you're not intending to come back to prospector

Oh, no not at all!
In fact I have set aside the coming weekend to finally do some work on prospector again.

This is something I wanted to do for quite some time, and have started doing more than once. I obviously needed the deadline to get me anywhere.

I actually feel sorry I didnt support you more with this project but we all got much in life to do, like actually playing countless hours of Prospector. I still think you need better exposition Magellan. Invest some time in doing some flash demo of prospector and post on newgrounds/kongregate. If that happend you would have tons of feedback for your 7drl project.
That heightmap mechanics looks really cool and I would love to see it in prospector. It's just I don't love fantasy genre as much as sci-fi. And prospector got that plus sand-box exploration and trading/managing. I love all those items by themselves, but together they form this masterpiece, PROSPECTOR. Keep the amazing work Magellan! We love you!

Absolutely no reason to do so d12!

I (pretty much) achieved my goal, am happy, and moving on :)

Actually i had 2 rather productive evenings working on prospector, and am aiming for the usual weekend right now to put it out there. (and glacier helped: I found the LOS bug, and transfered the routine to prospector, If it is not really better, at least the code is shorter now)

Publicity: personally I have yet to cease to be amazed at the fact that if everybody who ever downloaded prospector, would show up at my house for a beer, it would get pretty crowded (and cost me a bushel, if they wanted a second)
And I would have no idea how to make a flash demo of it. (never looked into it)

btw:
A few months ago i hacked out this little thingy. Still think this could be fun, if done right, and expanded upon:

Regarding porting the game to flash, there is a program: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/alchemy/ for porting C/C++ to flash, but I doubt thats any help since the game is not C. But maybe there is a C library that can be used to interpret the commands and then use the other program to run that on the web... I dunno. But getting anything that wasn't made in flash to run in flash is not a simple prospect...

I love how a simple screenshot of the game oozes atmosphere. I really cannot get over how vivid this game looks; which isn't something that can be said about most 'dungeon' rogue likes. Downloading now :)

(I voted for the "go ahead" option; not realising how old the post was xD)
